Catalina Ugarte is another young winemaker cutting an exciting new path in the ancient winemaking region of the Itata Valley. Her focus is on the uniquely Chilean viticultural heritage that is the País grape. She sources these grapes from heirloom vineyards over one hundred years of age in the village of Ranquíl, Chile. Working with small local growers in the Secano Interior of the valley, Catalina Ugarte sources her País fruit from centenarian vines planted in salinic granite soils. Her precise and particular touch is beautifully exemplified when it comes to this bottle of País - it is smooth and velvety while remaining quite floral and fresh. It retains some chew, but has freed itself from any ornery, snappy tannins. It is delicate and full of wild aromas with a refreshing finish. Tasting notes of sage, fruit leather and rosewater.
